Fédération Wallonie – Bruxelles

Stand E20

Since 2012, the General Administration of Culture of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation has a stand at Art Brussels. This presence pursues the objective of contributing to the diffusion of the work of its artists, both nationally and internationally. On the basis of a call for projects launched by the Direction des Arts plastiques contemporains, the curator Maud Salembier and the artist Valérian Goalec have been designated by a jury of experts. Valérian Goalec’s work was originally scheduled to be presented at the cancelled 2020 edition of Art Brussels.

Valérian Goalec (°1986) observes the shape of utilitarian objects and spaces for reception and exchange from everyday life and public space. These mass-produced artifacts and mass-produced devices seem to be designed to be inconspicuous. When divorced from their original context however, they take on a poetically absurd sculptural appearance, acquiring a different status through their spatial disposition or through the transitional operations effected on their materials or their scale.

These transitions result from intuitive thinking, associations of ideas, uses, forms and materials. Through a play on personal meanings and rebus, the initial configuration sometimes leads to completely abstract solutions, removed from their primary use. Adjusting events to structures with a sense of practical inventiveness akin to what Claude Lévi-Strauss defined as the “savage thought,” he highlights a diachronic relation to objects and beings.

The project designed for Art Brussels hence takes into account the often clinical and standardized dimension of art fairs, their ephemeral and modular aspect; the transit places, the spaces of speech and the standardized places of conviviality of the big shows. It proposes an exploration of proxemics as a process of being-with-others, through touch, sight, smell or sound. The visitors activate in an almost imperceptible loop the flows in presence.
